Martha and Me

Martha Stewart from 'Martha' documentary, 2024

I stayed in this past weekend, toggling between YouTube and Netflix, meandering between stand up comedy, suspense thrillers, celebrity gossip and political commentary. As I lounged in bed with a gorgeous-but-cheap Sauvignon Blanc, a Pork Shoulder Pot Roast slow cooked in a melange of mushrooms, mini potatoes and tri-colored baby carrots at the other end of the apartment. A small floor fan provided the necessary background white noise and a slight breeze to make the duvet that much more snuggle-worthy.

Of all that days offerings, I was most inspired by Martha Stewart's Netflix documentary, “Martha”. What stood out most throughout was her perfectionist streak, which I could definitely relate to. During her long her career, she garnered a reputation for being brash (there’s a scene when she’s chastising an assistant not to use such a small knife when cutting an orange. “Use the bigger one, its easier… stop rolling that camera!”). I can recall being accused of snapping on someone like that, but like Martha, I was just being hyper-focused on the minutia, striving for specific results. I thought she might be an Aquarius like myself, but actually she's an early-August Leo.

When she journeyed into catering, starting off at the Westport, NY farmhouse she had rehabbed into a grand country estate, she reminded me of my occasional picnic installations at Ravinia Festival. For me, I find it to be an extension of my creativity, as I exploit any chance I get to show off my vision.
