A recent Pinterest post in my email inbox boasted the headline, “Outdated Home Trends We Hope Never Come Back”. I really wasn’t even going to read the article, but since the very notion triggered me to create some blog content, I decided to give the claim a modicum of consideration, if only to decide how to temper my response. For whatever reason, the link… just buffered. So, WARNING, I’m riffing strictly off mere insinuation and point of view.
With design and fine artistry in my wheelhouse, I think what most got my goat about such a pronouncement is the self-bestowed authority and nerve. The notion of a home trend being outdated is purely based on the drive of capitalistic marketing. Remember plastic covered furniture? I’m sure at some point the concept started as an earnest solution to extending the life of family traffic in relation to home entertaining. But then, it ended up being marketed to drive sales and demand, even to the level of status and prestige.
When I think of the concept of HOME, I have no desire to change addresses based on the draw of the next designated PLACE TO BE (seen). As far as how one decides to feather their nest, I am a hardcore champion of personal style. Design choices have to align with the variables of one’s own settings and outlook, whether for a single or family occupancy. If you think you don’t have a single creative bone in your body, that’s OK. Just align yourself with someone who has vision! And I don’t see anything wrong with drawing inspiration from trends… just be sure that it will work for your scenario.
Now, if someone’s vision is the source of their creative income, they should be duly compensated, so don’t expect to get something for nothing. A genuine and well developed relationship does go a long way, though. Otherwise, just flounder in your own chaos, no judgement intended.
A person’s home really is their castle. That includes everything from a cardboard box to a palatial estate, rented or owned. Creating a conducive space for you or your family should not be based on the latest TREND. In my mind, a trend is just something that a lot of people happen to be similarly doing within a given time period. Following trends just for the sake of being trendy is a hollow sacrifice that ends up as fuel for continued exploitation and manipulation. If you have the means to indulge, then I may not be speaking to you.
